I Believe in the Devil

Here is a new piece I wrote and performed for North Church and their “I Believe” series. This poem was very difficult to write because I actually have a hard time with the idea of Satan. I think we blame this Devil for all the bad and thank God for all the good. Unfortunately, I think our Adversary is more responsible for the things we regularly call “Blessings” than God may be. 

Is it not our “Blessings” that make us greedy and keep us coveting others possessions? Is it not our “Blessings” that fatten us up and invoke gluttony into the temple of God? Is it not our “Blessings” that justify war for the sake of this weak version of freedom which is really only fear? 

We need to understand that our adversary is not only in the dark places of the world. But is very present in some of the world’s nicest things.
